Beiks LLC has tapped its expertise at dictionaries and other language-related software for mobile devices to develop LexSpell, a spelling checker application for Palm OS handheld devices. The new LexSpell will enable mobile professionals who compose emails and documents on their PDAs to double-check the spelling of their messages before sharing them with colleagues.

The new application relies on Beiks' LexLib, a popular dictionary and spell-checking engine built on proven industry technologies for spell-checking quality and speed and providing services to high-level applications like LexSpell and DataViz's DocumetsToGo. Beiks, well known for its BDicty series of handheld lexicons, developed LexSpell's word lists from the vast Beiks lexical databases and tested it for accuracy against world language standards like Webster, Oxford and Cambridge.

"Many people are leaving their laptops behind and relying more heavily on PDAs and smartphones for sending and receiving emails and business documents while on-the-go," said Bobby Kolev, president of Beiks LLC. "Proofreading the text of messages and documents on the small screen of a PDA can be a challenge, and LexSpell will help make sure that correspondence is not riddled with misspellings that will make the sender look unprofessional."

LexSpell provides instant spell-checking in most e-mail clients for Palm OS, such as Corsoft Aileron, SnapperMail, Treo Mail, Mailer, etc., as well as in other applications. It is available in a number of individual spell-checking lexicons, including American English, British English, German, Spanish, French and Italian. Lexicons vary from 100,000 to over 300,000 words and are expandable to enable users to add words that may be highly used in their industries but may not be found in the original databases.

As LexSpell recognizes misspelled words, it will automatically offer suggestions of similarly spelled words. Users can easily configure LexSpell to adjust for speed, depth and quality of suggestions.

LexSpell runs on all handhelds with Palm OS 3.5 or higher and supports 160 x 160 to 480 x 320 resolution modes. It is available at Beiks.com and online resources for PDA software, such as PalmGear and Handango, for $14.95, though users can purchase two lexicons together for only $24.95. A bundle of all lexicons may be purchased for $39.95. Beiks offers a fully-functional evaluation version for each language lexicon.
